Alex's Barber Shop has been open since 1961 — built by one man, carried forward by three generations of the same family, and still going strong today. This is not a brand story. It's a family story.

It Started in Hungary

Sandor Stibinger learned his trade the old world way — in Hungary, where barbering was a serious profession that demanded years of rigorous study, a steady hand, and a deep respect for the man sitting in your chair. Sandor earned the title of Master Barber through training, discipline, and an uncompromising standard that would define everything that came after.

When Sandor came to the United States, he brought all of it with him. The technique. The craftsmanship. The belief that every client deserves a barber who truly knows what he is doing.

Ledgewood, New Jersey — 1961

Sandor opened Alex's Barber Shop at the Circle Lanes Plaza in Ledgewood, New Jersey in 1961. He didn't open it to be fashionable. He opened it because this community deserved a real barbershop run by a real craftsman — and he was the man to build it.

For decades, the Ledgewood location was the heart of everything Alex's stood for. Classic cuts. Hot towel shaves. A chair you actually looked forward to sitting in. Sandor built something that lasted — and when he retired, he handed it to his sons.

The Second Generation

Sandor's sons John and Gabor grew up watching their father work. They knew the standard. They kept it. When Sandor stepped back, John and Gabor carried the craft and the culture of Alex's Barber Shop forward together — same discipline, same techniques, same commitment to doing the job right.

The shop stayed exactly what Sandor had built it to be. Because that was never up for debate.

The Third Generation

Gabor's two sons — Adam and Gabor Jr. — grew up the same way their father and uncle did. In the shop. Watching. Learning. Understanding that barbering done right is not a shortcut business.

When it was their turn, Adam and Gabor Jr. picked up exactly where John and Gabor left off. And in 2015, they made a move: after more than fifty years in Ledgewood, they relocated Alex's Barber Shop to its current home at 760 US Highway 46 East in Kenvil, New Jersey. New address. Same name. Same unbroken standard.

The ALX61 Line

With decades of combined time behind the chair, Adam and Gabor Jr. had strong opinions about every product that came through the shop. Most of what was commercially available was a disappointment — mass-produced, filler-heavy, built for margins rather than results.

So they built their own.

The ALX61 line of men's grooming products is small-batch and handcrafted, formulated with refined cold-pressed jojoba oil, grape seed oil, and argan oil. No shortcuts. No mystery ingredients. Just the same standard Sandor set in 1961 — applied to everything that leaves this shop.

When you use an ALX61 product, you are using something made by working barbers who use it themselves every day. That is the difference.

Alex's Barber Shop is at 760 US Highway 46 East in Kenvil, New Jersey. We are appointment only — because your time matters and so does the work. We don't rush. We don't cut corners. We do the job the way Sandor taught it, the way John and Gabor preserved it, and the way Adam and Gabor Jr. carry it forward today.

The Stibinger Family Timeline

Early 20th century, Hungary — Sandor Stibinger trains as a Master Barber in Hungary, earning his credentials through the rigorous old world apprenticeship tradition.

1961, Ledgewood, New Jersey — Sandor immigrates to the United States and opens Alex's Barber Shop at the Circle Lanes Plaza in Ledgewood, NJ. A community institution is born.

Second generation — Sandor retires and passes the shop to his two sons, John and Gabor Stibinger. Together they carry the craft and the standards of Alex's Barber Shop forward.

Third generation — Gabor's sons Adam and Gabor Jr. Stibinger take the reins, continuing the family trade and the shop's decades-long reputation for classic men's barbering.

2015, Kenvil, New Jersey — Adam and Gabor Jr. relocate Alex's Barber Shop to 760 US Highway 46 East, Kenvil, NJ — a new chapter built on the same foundation Sandor laid in 1961.

Present day — Adam and Gabor Jr. introduce the ALX61 line of handcrafted small-batch men's grooming products. Alex's Barber Shop is recognized as Best Barbershop in Morris/Essex County (Morris/Essex Health and Life) and maintains a 5-star rating across Google and Yelp.
